San MAtheu
A old finca turned in a beautiful garden
In the charming city of Sant Mateu, Ibiza, an old finca has been reborn into a lush, sustainable garden through the principles of permaculture. This farmhouse, with its rustic charm, now features a vibrant garden that embodies both beauty and ecological balance.
Permaculture principles have been meticulously applied to every aspect of this garden. The hardy Stipa grass, known for its resilience and low water needs, forms the backbone of the landscape. These graceful plants not only add aesthetic appeal with their feathery plumes but also play a crucial role in soil stabilization and erosion control.
Currently, efforts are focused on transforming an adjacent area into a functional parking spot. This project integrates permeable surfaces to prevent water runoff, with Stipa and other native plants interspersed to create a green, welcoming space. The parking area will seamlessly blend with the garden, showcasing how utilitarian spaces can also support biodiversity and sustainability.
Close to the finca, a variety of herbs and vegetables thrive, nurtured by composting and natural pest control methods. Further out, fruit trees provide shade and food, all arranged according to permaculture zoning principles.
This garden in Sant Mateu is a testament to how traditional farming practices can be enhanced with modern sustainability techniques. It serves as an inspiring model of ecological harmony, demonstrating that even practical spaces like parking areas can contribute to the beauty and balance of the environment.
